A well researched account of the resolution of the conflict between the Plains Indians, the White settlers, and their environment. The prairies of Colorado could only accomodate one settlement pattern, and the Cheyenne and Arapaho lost. The story is well told, Dr. West being a lively writer. A book that should become a classic and a model for future workers in this area,

This is an excellent - and I would argue very readable - contribution to the history of America's expansion west and its impact on Native Americans. West is a fine historian and a fine writer who captures the complexities of the interactions of Europeans and Native Americans in the Colorado area very well.
This book was a very informative source of information. I would only buy it if I wanted to learn about early Indian history. If I were not reading this book to gain knowledge I would not read it to be entertained. This is a hard to read book and only for in deaph research. I'ts rated at 16.3 for hardness to read in one paragraph. In another paragraph it's rated 10.0. So it is a very hard book to read.
