Combined with Kevin Lynch's Image of the City this book gives a good introduction to Boston's development which was literally raised out of the water. How small the city was up to the mid 19th century! The author provides a lavishly illustrated journey through time and space. The book is written for a local public intimately familiar with Boston (and its important families) which is sometimes perplexing for an outsider unable to see for himself. Fortunately, Google Earth comes to help. Nevertheless, a survey map highlighting the different stages might have been helpful.
