Description

People talk about love at first sight, about the way that men and women fall for each other immediately, but there is also such a thing as friendship at first sight.' In Paris, two friends and their lovers meet and become inseparable. PARIS DREAM-TIME is not a story of a lost generation but of four friends who find an elusive happiness amidst the clubs and bars of the Eleventh arondissement. Shockingly erotic, lyrical and tender, it is a novel about how people can turn their backs on all show more that has made them happiest. It also confirms Geoff Dyer as one of Britain's most talented and original writers. show less

There's a couple of things I consider deal-breakers in fiction. I had absolutely no idea I would run into one with this book. Everything is going along fine with this unnamed narrator, and all of a sudden he writes, "he could not see her arms which one day soon would be around his shoulders as he kissed her, which one day he would grip hard in his fists, shaking her, leaving ugly bruises". That's not foreshadowing. That's giving away parts of the plot. Why? What is this, a Stephen King book?
Unevenly interesting - when good, very good, but with stretches of mediocrity. An interesting exploration of what it means to be happy, and what it is to seek happiness.
