Not the best Gilbert , but Gilbert is always competent. The bit in this that stays with me is not the mystery but an impromptu lecture on the erotics of whipping as the policeman is seducing information out of a young woman by telling her about beating Arabs in his previous job as head of police in an Arab state.
A British police procedural with some nice, unexpected touches. The Brits wrote some lovely noir. A detective, new to a quiet burg, investigates the discovery of the body of a girl. To say much more of the plot would not be helpful, but I can recommend this. Some strong violence, not for the squeamish.
A Harper novel of suspense
