PreSchool-K-Admiring the airborne abilities of Bumblebee, Sparrow, and Butterfly, Caterpillar longs for wings of his own. "Too big to fly," the insect sadly spends his days eating and wishing. Like that other hungry caterpillar, Cain's main character crunches and munches through the book, and then falls asleep to awaken blissfully transformed into a butterfly. Much like his illustrations for Isobel Finn's The Very Lazy Ladybug (Tiger Tales, 2001), Tickle's cartoon artwork features bright colors and large, bold images. The energetic pages are filled with sweet-faced, stylized creatures. Different fonts are used to reflect the action of the story. Attentive listeners may note that Sparrow would be more likely to show more eat Caterpillar than encourage him, yet most young children will not notice this less-than-realistic detail. Although this tale is not highly original, Cain's simple language and Tickle's engaging illustrations make it acceptable for sharing in a group or individually.

A good read aloud for young children. Caterpillar wishes he could fly like Bumblebee, Sparrow and Butterfly, but he does not have wings. Bumblebee and Sparrow let him know he can’t because he’s not built to fly. Butterfly is more hopeful and tells him maybe one day he will. The illustrations in the book are beautiful and are filled with large brightly colored images. This book would be a great introduction to learning about a caterpillar’s life cycle.
This story is about a caterpillar who sees all of his friends fly around with their wings. He gets sad and dreams of having wings someday. Then he goes to sleep and wakes up as a butterfly with wings.
This is a good fantasy because it's about animals talking and interacting like humans do. The story holds together.
Media: paint
Age range: early elementary
I would use this book for a science lesson (butterfly cycle). Students love this book because it has great pictures and it's munched on every page!
This book would be good for learning about a bug life cycle, I think it would be fun to have a caterpillar in the class to watch it grow into a butterfly and then set it free.
a little caterpillar is eating and sees all these animals that can fly cause of their wings and he wants some. when he goes to sleep, he ends up waking up as a beautiful butterfly.
