How to Become King

The young hero, Stach, encounters a number of societal evils (pollution, bureaucracy, medical malpractice, etc.). Each problem requires more insight, courage, and compassion from him. His journey not only takes him across the world of Katoren, but also brings him to a better understanding of people and places, and finally - it brings out his own inner resources. This is an excellent "Bildungsroman" - a story where the protagonist undergoes profound change. And to top it all off: the book is genuinely funny too! Caveat: a basic grasp of Dutch is a minimum requirement. (There's an English translation called: "How To Become King"). Some understanding of Dutch church culture during the 1800's, will also increase the reader's appreciation of show more the understated humor in one chapter. Finally: I particularly love how this book weaves the great issues of society in among the very intimate issues of personhood - in a way that is perfectly pitched for YA readers. A timeless book. Dit is echt een van de klassiekers van de Nederlandse jeugdboeken. Ik ken niet veel mensen (van mijn generatie althans; begin jaren 90 geboren) die hem niet gelezen hebben. Ik vond het vroeger ook een heel spannend en leuk verhaal. Het blijft een leuk boek. Een van mijn favoriete kinderboeken!

The King of Katoren dies without leaving an heir and a group of ministers seizes the power, being very reluctant to give it away to the new king, should he arise. Therefore, they set a set of seven nearly impossible (almost Herculean) works that need to be completed...

I really liked this story as a child. It's a real classic in The Netherlands and I think almost everyone has read it at some point. I cannot vouch for the show more English translation, since I haven't read it, but I would certainly recommend the Dutch version. It was one of my favorites. show less

Herlezen voor de ff-leesclub, themadiscussie troonswisseling! Nog steeds een heerlijk boek, ook al beleef je het volwassene niet hetzelfde. Ook vallen je nu andere leuke dingen op, zoals de verfrissende anti-autoritaire houding van Stach. En dat zonder ooit onbeleefd te worden. Nog steeds een aanrader.

Het boek was erg vermakend. Stach de hoofdpersoon beleeft veel verschillende avonturen in dit boek. Ook heeft het verhaal verdrietige stukken wat het echt maakt. Het verhaal is ook heel grappig door de opmerkingen van Stach. De opmerkingen waren soms een beetje brutaal. Tot slot was het vaak erg spannend. Als er dan een opdracht gelukt was, kwam je weer voor de vraag te staan of Stach wel zou slagen om de volgende opdracht te volbrengen. Het is zeker een aanrader als je van spannende en avontuurlijke boeken houd. Daarnaast zit het verhaal goed in elkaar, alles wordt duidelijk verteld en heeft logische tijdsprongen. Het boek bevat ook historische kenmerken, hierdoor is het goed te gebruiken in de klas. Het boek is geschikt voor kinderen show more vanaf 10 jaar. show less

Dit boek is ook weer heel erg goed, net als het andere boek van jan ter louw; Oorlogswinter. In dit boek is er veel humor en zijn en ook mooie dingen die gebeuren waardoor kinderen willen blijven lezen. Ik denk dat het het beste in de categorie van 9 en 12 valt.

It is a very nice book. A combination of a historic and an adventurous novel. Despite Stach is a kind of knight, he is not at all an arrogant person, he's just an avarage young man. He lives through many adventures, nearly loses his life, but finally becomes the king of Katoren. It is a nice book.
