Description

Juvenile Fiction. HTML:The group of stories known as The Arabian Nights or The Thousand and One Nights is believed to have originated in the East during the early Middle Ages. The tales first appeared in a Western translation in France in 1704. This selection of favorite Arabian Nights stories, with new illustrations by Thea Kliros, features a multitude of colorful characters — devious magicians, monstrous giants, lovely princesses, and steadfast suitors — caught up in exciting show more adventures that take them to faraway lands.
The six classics included here are "Aladdin and the Wonderful Lamp," "Ali Baba and the Forty Thieves," "Abou Hassan, or, The Sleeper Awakened," "The Seven Voyages of Sinbad the Sailor," "Camaralzaman and Badoura," and "The Enchanted Horse." With this book as their guide, children can journey to the enchanted world of the Arabian Nights and enjoy the same time-honored tales that have enthralled readers and listeners for centuries.

Perfectly acceptable versions suitable for junior readers, although there are some killings of the evil-doers. Beautiful princesses and handsome princes figure in most of the tales, although there are also poor (but handsome) peasants who become rich through magic.
The simple ink drawings illustrating each story, commissioned for this edition, are nicely done.

From the book: These ancient stories first appeared in the West in French translation in 1704.The selections in this book are slightly corrected texts preiousl published. "Aladdin and the Wonderful Lamp", Andrew Lang, editor of "the Arabian Nighs Enertainments" 1898; the other five tales are from an anonymous and undated publication "Stories from the Arabian Nights": Abou Hassan, show more or, The Sleeper Awakened; Ali Baba and the Forty Thieves; The Enchanted Horse; Camaralzaman and Badoura; The Seven Voyages of Sindbad the Sailor. show less
