This is one of my favorites in the series of fun and informative alphabet books by Jerry Pallotta. The first two pages, "A is for anise" and "B is for basil", define spices and herbs. Then it's on to cinnamon from Sri Lanka, ginger ("If you bite into raw ginger, it seems to bite back."), java, pepper ("It wouldn't be fair to mention pepper without mentioning salt."), wasabi, and more. In fact, Pallotta claims "there are zillions of different flavors in the world." He works "zillions" into the Z page in each of his books.
The lovely illustrations by Leslie Evans are colorful and detailed. If you wonder why there's a crab on the mustard page, or a soccer ball with the nutmeg, the artist's notes in the back of the book explain it all.
The delicious alphabet book is shown through beautiful water color illustrations that are mouth watering.
Jerry Pallotta was a favorite for me as a child. I loved the Icky Bug Book, and this take on spices for an alphabet book is fantasitc. His books are very informative, and he is constantly trying to teach children about everyday things.
