Com o golpe militar de 1964, o Brasil rompera relações com o regime de Fidel Castro, repetindo o que já fizera quase toda a América Latina. Os passaportes brasileiros passaram a ostentar a advertência: "Não é válido para Cuba". Foi nessa atmosfera típica da Guerra Fria que Morais desembarcou em Cuba, onde passou três meses colhendo dados para uma reportagem que se tornaria histórica.
