A well-written and highly detailed, yet sensitive biography of the famous Horatio Nelson, of the battles of the Nile and Trafalgar. The authors (father and son) interweave interesting historical anecdotes not specifically related to Nelson that illuminate the times and the happenings, giving the book a broader dimension and a richer context than just the life of Nelson. The writing is lucid and in places almost poetic, making it a highly enjoyable read. Presentations of controversial material (the affair with Lady Hamilton, his family relationships, his mental and physical state at various points in his career) are even handed and demonstrate sensitivity to and understanding of the issues.
