Fifteen modern fairy tales. In Richard Kennedy's The Dark Princess, a blind princess offers her hand to the man who will give up his eyesight for her, while in Jane Yolen's The White Seal Maid, the protagonist seduces a human to produce males for an all-female seal colony.

Illustrations a little Artsy, as in, not always successfully illustrative or appealing. A few of the stories I have read before (though only by aggressive seeking) such as [b:Petronella|1447198|Petronella|Jay Williams|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1183695534l/1447198._SX50_.jpg|1437900] and [b:The Dark Princess|414714|The Dark Princess|Richard Kennedy|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1211964624l/414714._SX50_.jpg|403926], and a few just didn't work for me. Still, I highly recommend it for anyone interested in fractured or reimagined, or brand-new, fairy tales. Most are gently satirical and/or feminist. And I wouldn't mind owning a copy to reread, and I will try show more to find more by the authors, esp. those new to me.

Almost as good as [a:Alison Lurie|2046|Alison Lurie|https://images.gr-assets.com/authors/1354641645p2/2046.jpg]'s [b:The Oxford Book of Modern Fairy Tales|763479|The Oxford Book of Modern Fairy Tales|Alison Lurie|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1178141770l/763479._SY75_.jpg|1407198], though shorter.

From the introduction I learn that I need to investigate [b:The Mer-Child: A Legend for Children and Other Adults|2104640|The Mer-Child A Legend for Children and Other Adults|Robin Morgan|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1354209263l/2104640._SY75_.jpg|531488] and [b:Haroun and the Sea of Stories|4835|Haroun and the Sea of Stories (Khalifa Brothers, #1)|Salman Rushdie|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1419913148l/4835._SX50_.jpg|1934157]. Some stories work better than others, but I really liked this collection of fairy tales for a new time. It's been awhile since I finished it, so I don't clearly remember which works I liked best, but I remember that the one with the blind princess and the one by A.S. Byatt were both standouts.
This is an entertaining compilation of non-traditional fairy tales. Zipes is, of course, a giant in the field of fairy tale studies. I enjoyed this anthology and consider it a fine addition to my fairy tale studies collection.
