Good readable popular stories of the late nineteenth - early twentieth century. A lot are sentimental with happy endings, which is fine with me. They were selected on the basis of having been publisjed by Scribners and having been genuinely popular wuith readers, which I think a good test. Thety inclue some well-known items (Stockton's Lady or the Tiger) and some well-known authors (Barrie, Galsworthy, Edith Wharton, Ring Lardner) but on the whole they were chosen for reading pleasure not artistic quality.
