Description

Painting noir in the blackest shades, Goodis captures the bleak desperation of the urban jungle like no other writer before or since.--Neon "Nobody does despair like [Goodis] did!"--Time Out Alvin Darby's comfortable, middle class lifestyle is plunged into turmoil when he begins to suspect his wife of adultery and is simultaneously haunted by memories of his childhood relationship with his sister. Alvin deserts the family home and moves to the Tenderloin where he takes up again with his show more ex-girlfriend, Geraldine, who is now a cocaine addict. There, he plans the murder of his old friend, Pete Lanson, whom he suspects of being his wife's lover. Born in Philadelphia in 1917, David Goodis was the author of many noir classics--Dark Passage, The Burglar, Moon in the Gutter, Shoot the Piano Player--many of which have been made into cult films. His books are currently enjoying a considerable revival of interest. David Goodis died in 1967. show less

Once again, the strength of the writing helps make a thoroughly depressing story quite readable. The tale is like a protracted nightmare as a husband, driven by a vision of platinum blonde hair, drifts through several days of increasingly erratic behavior, including an all-night ramble that is more reminiscent of Stanley Kubrick's Eyes Wide Shut than anything else--although it lacks the sexiness. The explanation, or at least the partial explanation, for this strange obsession is telegraphed long before it is made explicit, so there isn't any real mystery here other than how it will all end. Along the way, however, it's a frequently harrowing ride, particularly during those parts of the story that feature Geraldine, a woman who makes the show more wife in Cassidy's Girl look like a prize. show less
" Tout commença par un rêve brusquement interrompu.
La nuit d'hiver devint réalité et Alvin Darby, bien réveillé, vit l'obscurité de la chambre, la blancheur cotonneuse de la couverture qui recouvrait sa femme sans le lit jumeau... " Mais l'obsession d'une chevelure blonde qui a réveillé Darby va le précipiter sur les chemins de son passé à la recherche d'une vérité qui lui paraît horrible. Il lui faudra descendre en enfer pour comprendre et... accepter.
