A son of a stable master and a chambermaid traverses the most different social milieus at his way to the high society. Action takes place in Spain, which induced me to read this book. Later on, becoming more acquainted with France and the French literature, I understood that Lesage characterised the conditions of French political and social life.

Ústřední postavou románu je Gil Blas, syn bývalého vojáka a matky z drobného měšťanstva, který se postupně stává z lokaje bohatým a váženým mužem. Autor zde na množství dobrodružných příhod ústředního hrdiny nastavuje satirické zrcadlo francouzským společenským poměrům doby Ludvíka XIV. a doby velkých změn po něm. Román je považován za významný kámen ve stavbě novodobého písemnictví.
