Description
The accidental death of a teenage boy has a profound effect on a small Irish town in this compelling new novel from the bestselling author of "Damage." As Sissy, the boy's mother, struggles to overcome her senseless loss, her daughter, Olivia, works to keep her brother's memory alive in a swiftly changing country. And Thomas--known as "The German" to his neighbors--is drawn into the family's grief, forcing him to confront the past that has brought him to Ireland and a new crossroads. A show more brilliant meditation on love, loss, and the beauty of living even when times are tough, "The Truth About Love "shows us how men and women are shaped by tragedy, by their inherent characters, and by what they are able to learn from one another. show lessTags

This is an absolutely exquisite book, from the opening first-person experience of death through the third-person narrative of the survivors' pain and recovery. The consequences of war and civil strife, love, fear, sorrow - Hart's language richly evokes the feelings of family members and strangers alike toward one another. Does she reveal the truth about love? Perhaps not. Can, in fact, anyone reveal the truth about another's love? But she makes an entrance into a complexly tangled and fragile yet fierce emotion that can both submerge us into and sustain us through the darkest experience. As others have commented, her most evocative line is "After a tragedy, many survivors are lost." This is the story of those who are almost lost.

In this sophisticated literary work, Hart shows how love of family and love of country can feed from each other. But to fulfill the promise of her title and dramatize patriotism as intensely as she does the O’Haras’ lifelong bonds requires a more substantial narrative.
