This is probably good for young readers, like in preschool, but I do not see I would personally incorporate it into my classroom. The cultural representation was great, but a bit outdated, and it perpetuates many stereotypes about people across the world by showing minorities as poor and white people as wealthier individuals who bathe more often.
This book is all about bread. Even better, it's about bread all over the world! Each picture is from a different country, and they all show people eating bread. The sentence structure is typical for a children's book, especially the sentence that says "skinny bread, fat bread, round flat bread, bread with a hole, crunchy bread, lunchy bread...and bread to soak up your egg." It's has a rhyme structure some of the time, and that is absolutely perfect for an informational book like this. The actual message of this book is probably that all cultures can be connected by something as simple as bread!
This book did an excellent job with the repetitive vocabulary and how it used the word bread. My favorite part of this book is how it demonstrates that there are several different cultures, who all have the same thing in common. The other part of the book I enjoyed was the very last page where it listed all the different countries and gave little facts about each country. I look forward to reading other books in this series such as Shoes, Shoes, Shoes.
I like this book because of the simplicity of the text and the images used throughout the book. Each page contains only one sentence or begins with a sentence that is then completed on the next page. I think this makes the book an easy read. By starting a sentence on one page and not ending it until the next page, it engages the reader to keep reading. For example, on page 10 it states, “crunchy bread, lunchy bread…” then on page 11 it completed the sentence with, “and bread to soak up your egg.” Along with the simple text, the book provides pictures throughout the book to give a clear and detailed image of the types of bread that are being described. My favorite part of the book is the very end. At the very end of the book show more there is an index. The index includes page numbers and descriptions about the types of bread on that page by listing bread from different countries. For example, on page 8 there is a picture and in the index it states, “Indonesia: This American-style sliced white bread is made by a bakery in Surabaya, Indonesia.” This book helps to demonstrate the different traditions with bread that people posses around the world. Each part of the world uses bread for multiple reasons and some are even well known for their products. I think the central message of the book is just to inform readers on the topic of bread and the variations of how it is used around the world. show less
It would be a good book to have on hand during the Bread Communion at church, or during that whole month. The text is ultra-simple (made for preschoolers) and is primarily comprised of photographs of people (from many cultures) eating many types of bread. I liked how the appendix gives more information about each photo and the type of bread featured.
This little book talks about bread. There aren't very many words, but the few that there are augment a child's vocabulary, yet are easy to understand. The most important part of this book are the pictures. Using pictures of people all over the world eating all kinds of different bread, helps children to begin to understand the bigger world around them. The book also illustrates how even though some things are the same, they can also be quite different.
Great informational book about all the different types of bread that all different cultures eat. Also shows all the different shapes bread can be in which helps recognize when they see them in person. Age 3-5 Pierce County Library
