(3rd in Henrie O Mystery series)One of America's most highly acclaimed mystery writers brings us another installment in the career of Henrietta "Henrie O" Collins, an ex-reporter turned sleuth. These days, Henrie O is teaching journalism at Thorndyke University, where she encourages an ambitious student to pursue an investigative series about three unrelated and hitherto unsolved local crimes. But the student's study habits get her killed. Her body's discovered at the site of one of the show more three crimes she was investigating. The police and the powers-that-be at Thorndyke are rabidly against Henrie O's involvement in the case. But the stubborn, sixtysomething investigator is committed to dredging up a past everyone wants to keep buried -- even if it means placing herself firmly in the killer's path.
"A sassy heroine . . . She says what she thinks and pulls no punches." (Chicago Sun-Times)

In the first two Henrie O mysteries, you read references about Henrietta Collins having been a Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist, but it's in this book that you get to actually see her strut her stuff. In Death in Lovers' Lane, Henrie O is teaching at a college in Missouri that is a thinly disguised version of the University of Missouri and its excellent journalism school. Henrie O assigns an arrogant but brilliant student named Maggie Winslow to turn up new evidence in three unsolved cases from long ago. When Maggie turns up dead the very next day, a guilt-ridden Henrie O suspects that it's her assignment that led to Maggie's death, and the former journalist sets out to find out who the killer is.
In the process, the intrepid Henrie O show more re-investigates the three unsolved cases. She finds out the secret to not one death, but of six. Henrie O demonstrates the grit, tenacity, intelligence, and integrity you'd expect from a world-class reporter.
I know most readers prefer Carolyn Hart's Death on Demand series. As for me, I'm sticking with Henrie O. I hope you do, too. show less

Thia was actually four mysteries in one that kind of came together in the end. It was very interesting seeing our protagonist send her student off to find real answers to three old murder cases only to have the student become a murder case herself. Then our heroine has to pick up the story and find the answers herself and she does but only by putting herself into mortal danger as well. But in the end she does find them as well as answer to a question in her own life.
I reached for my cordless phone, punched the numbers, listened to the recorded message.
"Hello, I'm Maggie Winslow, a student at the University. I'm writing an article about three famous unsolved crimes in Derry Hills. If you know anything about those who were involved, please leave a message after the tone. I will return your call promptly. Thank you. "

The only reason I'm giving Carolyn Hart 3 1/2 stars instead of 4 is that I have to leave SOME room at the top!
