Less a sequel to the Percy Jackson series and more of an extension, this was typical Riordan fare. The heroes come from mysterious backgrounds and are almost immediately thrust into danger. The pacing was good and held my attention from start to finish. I actually thought Piper, something of a secondary character, had the best depth and development. The direction the series appears to be headed will be interesting, and I'm sure it will be a big hit to fans of the first series.

For pure taste reasons, I prefer the Kane Chronicles (Egyptian over Greek/Roman). ( )

Picks up where the Percy Jackson books leave off.
I really enjoyed seeing new aspects of that world and learning more about different campers. ( )

Even though dreams and amnesia are two of my least favorite plot devices, this was still enjoyable. Jason is a great character. ( )

This is the first book of the "Heroes of Olympus" series which is quite popular at the library. The exposure to Greek and Roman mythology is fun--I prefer books with a little sentiment but I can see why it is popular. ( )

Jason wakes up on a school bus with no memory of his life before but two friends who seem to remember him, Leo and Piper. When the trio are attacked by weird supernatural creatures, Jason knows just how to fight them, and then three of them are whisked off to Camp Half-Blood where they learn they're demigods and that a major quest is about to start which will require the skills of Jason, Leo, and Piper.

A fun start to a new series set in the same world as the Percy Jackson books. As an adult reader, I predicted most of the major plot points but that didn't take any of the fun away from the experience. There's plenty of action and humour and it was a delight to get to know three new characters while getting some time with a few familiar faces as well. A solid read. ( )

Book description
Jason has a problem. He doesn’t remember anything before waking up in a bus full of kids on a field trip. Apparently he has a girlfriend named Piper and a best friend named Leo. They’re all students at a boarding school for “bad kids.” What did Jason do to end up here? And where is here, exactly?

Piper has a secret. Her father has been missing for three days, ever since she had that terrifying nightmare. Piper doesn’t understand her dream, or why her boyfriend suddenly doesn’t recognize her. When a freak storm hits, unleashing strange creatures and whisking her, Jason, and Leo away to someplace called Camp Half-Blood, she has a feeling she’s going to find out.

Leo has a way with tools. When he sees his cabin at Camp Half-Blood, filled with power tools and machine parts, he feels right at home. But there’s weird stuff, too—like the curse everyone keeps talking about. Weirdest of all, his bunkmates insist that each of them—including Leo—is related to a god.
