Short biography
Agnès Rosenstiehl was born in Paris to a family of artists. She studied music at the Conservatoire national supérieur de musique (National Conservatory of Music) and took first prize for harmony there in 1966 under the name Agnès Gay.

She also pursued a degree in letters at the Sorbonne but dropped out.

In 1968, after having children, she began writing and illustrating books for young people. She is best known for a series of children's books following the life of Mimi-Cracra, called in English translation Silly Lilly. She co-wrote and illustrated Paris-Pékin par le Transsibérien (Paris to Beijing by the Trans-Siberian Railway, 1980) with her husband, mathematician Pierre Rosenstiehl, after a family trip. She has explored the French language in numerous Alphabet books, including L'Alphabet fou ou le livre des syllabes sibyllines (The Mad Alphabet), which was included in the 1980 Honor List chosen by the International Union for Children's Books (IBBY).

In 1995, she won the grand prize from the Société des gens de lettres (SGDL) for children's books for Les Adverbes.

She was named a Chevalier of the Legion of Honor in 2020.

In Agnes Rosentiehl’s Silly Lilly, the title character describes the activities that she does during each season of the year. Rosentiehl’s illustrations follow a very simple layout of two frames per page, in which the story is followed like a comic strip. Her drawings are cartoon-like, simple with strong outlines, and without a great deal of detail. Almost all of the text is provided through Lilly speaking. Despite the very basic nature of this story, Rosentiehl is able to communicate show more solid concepts about topics as wide-ranging as how to swing, the ability of water to magnify objects, and that one can’t always judge objects by their exteriors.
The Toon Book presentation of the story retains much of the experience of reading a physical book through techniques such as allowing the reader to watch the page slide across the screen when it is “turned.” The “Read to Me” option allows children to read along with a narrator who sounds as if she is very close to their age, which provides an almost social interactive feel to the book. In addition the narration in both the English and French versions of the story is suitably clear for beginning language learners to both understand and repeat for listening comprehension and speaking practice. This book offered through the Toon Book Reader service is highly recommended for grade school libraries, language teachers, and public libraries with tech-savvy or multilingual patron populations.

"The world goes around...and the seasons change!" Lilly marches through each season, doing seasonally appropriate activities (finding seashells on the beach in summer, rolling snowballs in winter, taking a bite out of each apple in fall, a la Ramona Quimby). Lilly's teddy accompanies her. This small book is welcoming to emerging readers with its small trim size, landscape orientation, and spacious layout, with no more than four panels across a double page spread.
"Silly Lilly and the Four Seasons" by Agnes Rosenstiehl is the English translation of a popular French easy-reader. Available online as a Toon Book, children can get help with reading by opting to have the book read aloud to them and can "flip" through the pages at their own pace. Moreover, it's available in a couple different languages, including the original French, making it a great tool for ESL students and children learning a foreign language.

Lilly is a quirky little girl who has fun show more playing outdoors no matter what season it is. This story follows Lilly as she goes through a whole year of seasons, each involving its own special activity. Lilly's companion is her Teddy Bear and, although he isn't the most active character, he facial expression lets readers in on what he's thinking at any given moment. (When Lilly pelts him with snowballs in the winter story, he is not amused.) Altogether, the plot is not a complex one, just a description of everyday activities with a little humor, but this is appropriate for the target age group of beginning readers.

The stories are simple, fun and easy to follow, and the illustrations have little subtle details that will capture readers attention. The book is divided into little stories, one for each season, which might be an ideal format for the child who has trouble focusing. However, each story ends a little too abruptly, as does the book itself, and this throws off the pacing.

SILLY LILLY AND THE FOUR SEASONS is a practice reader for children reading at the kindergarten level. It's a cute little book that follows Lilly through the seasons.

It begins with Spring and Lilly going to the park where she plays with her teddy bear. The text talks about how she likes to dance, jump, nap and play. And I should add that the 'story' is told in frames, like a comic book.

Summer has Lilly at the beach. She's standing in the water and noting the creatures around her, like fish show more and shell-critters. Fall is represented by apples. Lilly points out there different colors and eats one. And finally, Lilly is seen playing in the Winter snow. Teddy is back and the target of snowballs. It's actually pretty humorous as the bear's expression changes.

To complete the cycle, Lilly is back at Spring, swinging at the park. I think this helps children to grasp the cyclical rotation of the seasons.

SILLY LILLY AND THE FOUR SEASONS is a very nice practice reader for young children. The text is still large, but the format is different --like a comic-- which I think is a nice change of pace for kids. Besides practicing reading, children will get some reinforcement of what they know about the seasons. There's no heavy science, but Lilly is shown in season appropriate garb doing seasonally appropriate activities. So that is nice.
