There are so many books out there dealing with Quaker history--why another? The answer lies in that Martin didn't simply regurgitate the same old same old. In a format new (to at least me!), she divided a "Spiritual Journey" into "ten elements":
~~~Awakening: Longing; Seeking; Turning Within
~~~Convincement: Openings; The Refiner's Fire; Community
~~~Faithfulness: Leadings; The Cross; Abiding; Perfection
Each section is divided into two: How the topic in question played out in 17th c., and how show more it is reflected in the contemporary world.
I predict this will become a modern Quaker classic. 5***** show less
This book can build a holy bridge among all branches and traditions of Friends who have the courage to walk across it, so please pass it on. It can also capture the imagination of spiritual seekers of all faiths, far beyond the bounds of the Society of Friends, for the spiritual journey Marcel Martin describes is not limited to any one tradition. Marcel understands and interprets early Quaker experience in fresh and profound ways…. She does not write about the early Friends as a detached show more historian, analytical theologian, or objective outside observer, but as an intuitive, empathic fellow traveler because she shares their spiritual DNA. show less
In this deep and lovely pamphlet, Martin writes about what prayer with and for others is, in her experience, how she thinks it may work, and what it may do. Her experience has drawn her to a convincement of "a divine reality permeating myself and all of creation," and "that although our bodies are separate, we are connected to one another in an invisible, spiritual web through which something very powerful and healing can be transmitted instantaneously -- Light, energy, love, forgiveness, show more soul communication."
She has explored many ways of holding others in the Light, or praying for others, and lays out her conclusions on what and how to do this. She finds that praying for others seems to be an opportunity to participate in divine love, and writes about prayer for individuals, the meeting or meeting committees, praying with others, healing prayer and meetings for healing, prayer for the world, and more.
This essay is full of wisdom that seems to lift the veil a little. She shares a variety of experience and conclusions that are likely to offer helpful insight to virtually everyone. It is not only inspiring, but also a read that feels like a peaceful blessing itself. show less
The divine revelations found in dreams shaped the beginning of Quakerism and helped guide Friends to prophetic ways and witness. For hundreds of years, dreams were shared widely in the transatlantic Quaker community and served as an important source of collective spiritual insight and instruction. In a time when we are facing unprecedented changes in climate and society, the guidance and revelations available to us through dreams and visions can provide much-needed help in finding our way show more forward, both individually and collectively. show less
