Stearns' The Story of Jazz is a very readable and entertaining introduction to the subject for those without the time or inclination to tackle Gunther Schuller's massive work on the subject. This is the book I'd give to a young person just getting interested in jazz.
Although I've only given it four stars, Stearns' book remains the best book I know of about vernacular jazz dance.
