This book is more than an atlas. It is full of maps, charts, lists, and essays. The subjects it covers include Ancient Indians, Ancient Civilizations, Indian Lifeways (culture, art, technology, shelter, clothing, religion, etc.), Indians and Explorers (a chronological list is included), Indian Wars (by far the most extensive section of the book), Indian Land Cessions, and Contemporary Indians.
Back matter is extensive, and includes a general chronology of North American Indian history, an show more alphabetical list of tribes with their locations, both historical and contemporary, a list of reservations by state in the US, and by province in Canada, an alphabetical list of major Indian place names in the US and Canada, and a list of museums, historical societies, reconstructed villages and archeological sites pertaining to Indians in the US and Canada. Finally there is a bibliography and index.
Evaluation: While much of this information can be gleaned off of the internet, it is very nice to have it all in one place, as this book provides. show less

An excellent reference. My only disappointment is its failure to identify many of the early tribes in the Northeast. The Introduction adequately explains why but I am still disappointed. One of my objectives while working on my detailed book regarding the Podunks is to get publications such as this to at least identify them in the geographical area. I have identified 7 locations in the book which provide relevant detail to anyone interested in learning more about the Native Americans in show more Connecticut. Those sections include:
- Introduction
- Listing of Entries
- Entries Organized by Culture Areas
- Northeast Culture Area
- Algonkin
- Algonquians
- Northeast Indians
Understanding the Podunks necessitates understanding their surroundings. Their time was when tribes were small (several hundred) versus those later which were large (thousands). show less

An increadibly useful read and reference resource with maps, place names and history. Starting with the advent of humans and continuing through genocide.
