Flirting With Pride And Prejudice: Fresh Perspectives On The Original Chick Lit Masterpiece (Smart Pop series, 0) by Jennifer Crusie
Being a fan of Pride & Prejudice, I found this book to be highly entertaining. It kept me laughing and opened my mind to things I hadn't originally thought about. The essays included are such a fine assortment, rather like a box of chocolates in that you can find at least ONE essay to like.
Multiple times, I would be sitting in a class and begin laughing (which came with a return of blank stares directed at me). I really enjoyed this book and I believe it has enhanced my experience with show more Pride & Prejudice.
One of the things I love most about this book is the various authors and information provided about each at the end of every essay. It presents many opportunities to find other books and authors to keep my eye on.
Overall, I consider this book to be very enriching and recommend it to any Pride & Prejudice lover =) show less

Seven Seasons of Buffy: Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers Discuss Their Favorite Television Show by Glenn Yeffeth
A collection of twenty-two essays on Buffy the Vampire Slayer.
I got a big kick out of this! While there are certainly a few duds, (most of which take the form of good ideas presented in a haphazard, difficult fashion), most of the pieces are solid. They back up their conclusions with concrete examples from the show. They explain their points in enough detail that I can see exactly where they're coming from. And amidst all the scholarly jargon, there's a strong love of the subject under show more discussion.
They're basically my favourite sort of criticism. Fun, literate, and very easy to get wrapped up in. Even when I disagreed with the essayists, I could see where they were coming from. They provided me with an excellent starting point for my own critical response to the show, and really got me thinking about all the different ways people view this important piece of popular culture. I really believe that meaning lies with the viewer/reader/listener, and that the story I've experienced need not be the same as the one you've encountered. Anthologies like this prove how many different ways we can react to any given text, and they do so in a fascinating way.
Highly recommended to Buffy fans. show less

Flirting with Pride & Prejudice: Fresh Perspectives on the Original Chick-Lit Masterpiece (Smart Pop series) by Jennifer Crusie
A collection of essays (and handful of short stories) from chick-lit and modern literary authors assesses the classic Jane Austen novel Pride and Prejudice. It's a fun light-hearted criticism of the book, addressing it from a modern perspective, even going so far as to imagine what it might be like if Elizabeth Bennet and her sisters had to deal with cell phones or if the book was actually a reality TV show. Some of the essays are better than others, but most of them were easy reads with show more enough I-hadn't-thought-about-it-that-way throughout to hold my interest. show less
Flirting with Pride & Prejudice: Fresh Perspectives on the Original Chick-Lit Masterpiece by Jennifer Crusie
It's edited by Jennifer Crusie, but the 24 short pieces are by a variety of authors. It's a mix of essays and short stories in response to Price and Prejudice. I suppose the short stories qualify as fanfic, as they take the characters from the novel. Some of the stories are set in the world of P&P, and others transport the characters to modern time. Crusie is a smart, funny writer, so it's no surprise that she's put together a smart, funny collection. I'll never look at Mary Bennet the same show more way again. show less
