Jim Henson (1) (1936–1990)

This graphic novel was a total trip - so much so that it’s kind of pointless to try to describe it adequately. It seems on the surface like a simple adventure story with an unwitting protagonist, but his mad-cap journey through the desert only to end up back at the town which he left originally is definitely an allegory for self-discovery in the grand tradition of Don Quixote. Paired with luscious illustrations by Ramon Perez, this book is definitely one of the most captivating graphic show more novels that I’ve read in a long time. I’m a bit disappointed that Hensen and Juhl never managed to shop this story to a willing production studio, but I’m not entirely sure that they could have done as much with a physical interpretation of the script - budgets and effects limits being what they are - as the no-limits of the graphic novel medium. show less

Every time I learn something new about Jim Henson I like him even better. What a wonderful, inspirational, and zany man. As a kid I loved Sesame Street and the Muppets and The Dark Crystal and The Labyrinth and as an adult I am still taken in with his creations. For not being human they have a wide array of emotions and can share that with their viewers. To this day, I tear up whenever I hear The Rainbow Connection. It's so pure and comforting and after having read this book, I think Jim show more Henson was pure and comforting. What a gift. Gorgeous, evocative and immersive, and with a very fun core concept and t heme at heart -- but the plot and pace are both rather too meandering for my tastes. Recently rewatched it after finishing the excellent Netflix prequel series, and found that impression still held (though I now have added fondness to it due to it spawning that spin-off). But the pacing aside, I'm awed by the effort and sheer scope of this film in its own right, and as a fantasy fan, I'm thrilled it and its magnificent show more world still exists in the public consciousness. ‘The Dark Crystal’ was one of my favourite films as a child, so it was with great anticipation that I borrowed this book from the library. I was not disappointed. The cover is beautiful, with the front showing various characters from the film and the back sporting a pattern reminiscent of the crystal itself. Such a beautiful cover promises wonderful things for the quality of the images contained within, and boy does this book deliver.

Created by a variety of artists, each piece offers a unique interpretation, infusing fresh life into the beloved cinematic classic. The visuals evoke a sense of nostalgia, transporting readers back to the magic and wonder of the original creation.

Overall, while it might have been nice if the artists provided commentary about their work, and their personal connection with ‘The Dark Crystal,’ the art is so undeniably captivating, that such commentary isn’t missed too much. This book is phenomenal, and I was sad to have to return it to the library. I will definitely be buying this for my permanent collection. show less
