Mitchell and Black's condensed history of psychoanalysis was a stimulating read, however, even after reading a short text like Bettelheim's Freud and Man's Soul it is clear that the two authors had a ( I would say) misguided agenda with Freud that made it difficult for me to appreciate their explanations and synthesis of theory. That is, if the premises with which they were starting the investigation were off then the whole enterprise felt dubious.
This is an unusually lucid discussion of Freud and various subsequent variations of psychoanalysis up until about 1995. The jargon may get you down, but I think this has been handled about as clearly as possible. The various theories are presented in the classical fashion with an associated case history.
[There is no discussion of attempted measures of efficacy, controlled studies, or similar possible impediments to these creations, but there is plenty of literature on that (or its absence) show more in the last few decades.] show less

Very insightful book written from a Freudian perspective on long-term relationships. Highly accessible for all. Very recommended. Mitchell blends his analysis & discussion on his patients very nicely.
Well Written comprehensive and accessible introduction to psychoanalysis from a clinical perspective
