WOW! This book has rocked my comfortable Christian world. Katie Davis felt called by God to go to Africa by the time she was 16. By winter break of her senior year she and her mother went to Uganda to spend three weeks volunteering in an orphanage. After high school she returned to Uganda as a kindergarten teacher for what she promised her parents would be one year before she would return and go to college. That year changed Katie's life. She knew God called her simply to love others, show more especially the children, most of whom lived in poverty and far too many of whom were being raised by elderly or infirm relatives, or were trying to raise themselves. And love them she does. She believes God's promises in a living, daily, minute-by-minute way. She believes that the only way to explain to the unloved the love of God is to first model that love for them. She believes if God calls her to do something, He will provide the means. And he does, time and time again. She believes God does give people more than they can bear, because in that way we learn to rely on Him to carry us through. She learns lessons from everything that happens and relies on her Lord completely. As a result of her love for God, this one woman is changing the world around her. Children are going to school, eating better, having some of their medical needs met, women are learning skills to support their families. All because one young, untrained woman is blessed to be called by God to serve his kingdom.
When I began this book even I wasn't sure I'd finish it because of its oozing Christianity; I, a Christian, doubted anyone could love God this much. But I was won over by how genuine and modest she is. She wrote the book to get out the message that children are starving and dying and that so many could be saved by what an average American regularly spends on entertainment. By the time I'd finished this book (in one sitting) I didn't just feel I'd read an inspiring story, I felt challenged to examine my life. In that she was successful. show less

PEACE AMID CHAOS
“I don’t want to just know what the peace of Christ is; I want to live in the confidence and security that God has promised me. I want to be both desperate for Him and deeply anchored in His certain peace as the world around me spins in chaos.”
The referenced quote is one of my favorites from Safe All Along by Katie Davis Majors. It is how I want to believe and live, and I am thankful that Majors put this into words. Reading one of Majors’ books is like sitting and show more talking to an old and trusted friend. She makes me feel like she has just dropped by my home for a visit, and it may take us a short while to catch up as she shares with me all that has gone on in her world since our last visit. As I read, I compare notes to draw parallels with my life and think of questions I wish I could ask. Then, I laugh because Majors usually manages to answer all of these questions by the end of her book!
In this book, Majors tackles what it means to be safe with God.
What does it mean to trust God with your whole heart? Majors reminds us of those precious verses many of us learned as children: Proverbs 3:5-6 She reminded me that when I fix my eyes on God, He makes my path straight. He does not necessarily give me the road map. But when I keep my eyes Fixed On Him, I have noticed I tend to take fewer side trips, fall in fewer potholes, and rarely get lost!
I have read the other books Katie Davis Majors has written, and each of them has caused me to examine my own life and relationship with God, be challenged, grow, and be greatly encouraged. Safe All Along is another beautifully written work that brings readers peace amid chaos.
I was provided a complimentary copy of this book by Multnomah & NetGalley. The opinions expressed here are entirely my own and without influence. show less

I have not anticipated a book this much in quite some time. I was deeply encouraged after reading Kisses From Katie and I looked forward to the wisdom God would give her to share with us. Of course, the book did not disappoint. We follow her all over the streets of Uganda as she quietly loves and brings healing to those around her. We sit in the sacred space of the bedside of woman being ushered into the arms of Jesus. We follow her on a plane to America to get a young man desperately need show more surgery. We walk the isle at her wedding and welcome a new baby with her. My heart is wildly aglow from the word of her testimony.
So much of her story I can empathize with. The same words he told her through scripture, he has told me (and I'm sure many of you). He walks her through the suffering God declares before the restoration in Habakkuk. Over and over Isaiah 61 speaks to her. Beauty from ashes doesn't often look what we think it will. Sometimes it comes as we usher someone into the arms of Jesus.
One thing that resonated with me was that she said she was tired. She wasn't tired of serving or giving. She wasn't afraid. Her Spirit was simply so weary from seeing so much grief. So many addicted to alcohol, assaulted, ill, and one friend being poisoned by a rival. Through all of her hurt and questioning, God reminded her over and over that HE was strong when she was weak. He is why the time of singing has come and flowers spring forth on the earth in Song of Solomon. He who promised is faithful.
I loved this book. I could hardly put it down. It encouraged me over and over to serve in my home and the streets. show less

Katie Davis was your typical middle-class teenager. She went to high school, had a boyfriend, and did all the normal teen things. But there was one major difference. Katie was madly, deeply, faithfully in love with Jesus Christ. In her senior year, she talked her parents into letting her go on a missions trip to Uganda that ultimately changed her life forever. Katie fell in love with the people of Uganda and decided to spend her first year after high school working there. It took a lot of show more convincing for her parents to agree to postponing college, but soon Katie was on a plane with a promise to come back and get on track next year. But no one expected the life God had in store for her.
Over the next year, driven by the need she saw around her, Katie started a child-sponsorship program, enrolling over 100 kids; she adopted 13 girls; provided food, clothing, health care, and tutoring on a daily basis to all the sponsored kids, and so much more. I wanna make sure you didn't miss that. BEFORE SHE WAS 21, SHE ADOPTED 13 CHILDREN.What did you do before you were 21?
This book made me cry, and laugh, and pray that I would be even half as faithful and trusting as Katie is. At 21, she has a faith and walk with God that will challenge most people's. The book itself is an autobiography of sorts, telling her story from beginning to wherever it is now. She includes excerpts from her journal, allowing added insight into the character of a life-and-soul-saver.
I think these journal entries were my favorite part. It kept the book real. We (okay, I) have a tendency to almost idolize people who are being used by God to do amazing things (But we would never call it idolizing, of course. That's breaking a commandment! ). These journal entries show the person behind the acts. We see the fear, the doubt, the errors, and the humor. They help us realize, this person is just like me. She's nervous and clueless, too. She's scared and amazed, too. But she still said yes. She answered when God called. She's still human. And a young one at that!
I could go on for a really long time about how much I love this book and this woman. But I won't, because I want you all to go out, buy it, and read it. I think you'll love this woman as much as I do! show less
