- Nationality

If I Were You: A Novel: A Novel (A Gripping Christian Historical Fiction Story of Friendship and Survival Set in London During WWII and Post-War America) by Lynn Austin
Despite an improbable premise, I enjoyed this story immensely. It starts out in 1950 with Audrey, a British war bride with a young son, arriving in America hoping to find a home with her late husband's family. Instead, she finds her childhood friend (and former scullery maid for her family) Eve living with HER young son using Audrey's identity. Then the story is told in flashbacks to their childhood friendship on Audreys' parents' estate (where Eve's mother was Audrey's mother's personal show more maid) in the 1930s through the traumatic events of WWII, leading up to how they eventually ended up in tangled place they now are. All their lives, despite their unlikely friendship, Eve has envied Audrey's wealth and social position that seems to open every door to her, and Audrey has envied Eve's loving family and escape from the strictures of high society. It's a moving story of friendship lost and found, faith lost and found, and moving past the trauma life deals you to build the life you were meant to have. It's a most excellent, if unlikely, tale. show less
Another stellar read by Lynn Austin! An engaging dual timeline story with an unsolved mystery, interesting history, and relationship issues at its core. Set in Michigan in a town built on the lumber industry, between 1873-4 and present day.
A well-written and perfectly paced story that managed to touch on deep issues relevant to today. The marriages in both time periods had serious difficulties that had me wanting to pray for the characters, they felt so real. The friendship between Hannah show more and Kate was especially touching and convicting at times. It made me think about what it means to truly be a good friend to someone who is different, addressing fears, and reaching out to others who are struggling with faith and hope. The house restoration project was an interesting way to bring out the history of the area and delve into the mystery. Loved how it brought people together and paralleled the personal restoration and faith journey of Hannah.
Highly recommend to readers who enjoy books with flawed characters, faith and hope. 5 stars!

This book was so much fun! An entirely different view of the 1893 Chicago Fair than several that I have recently read. But I expected characters from those books to bump into Violet!
Violet is a true romantic with wild scenarios scrambling in her head. “ My imagination is a gift, but I had to live in the real world.” She does learn to grow up. “ Everything would change. That was the lesson I had learned this summer. Life was all about change.”
Her life is a study in contrasts: What show more she has been told her life should look like and new possibilities that present themselves when she visits her grandmother and three aunts in Chicago. Her grandmother the widow of a minister, one aunt is an avowed Suffragette, another a rich society wife and my favorite, Aunt Birdie who lost her husband in the Civil War. Although her mind tells her he is still fighting that war, she gives wisdom to Violet. She urges her to seek love in a marriage partner. Thus Violet is faced with conflicting opinions on which of four suitors she should accept.
Her grandmother’s advice: “Don’t make choices in life to please somebody else. The only One you ever need to please is God.”
One of the funniest quotes is about the symptoms of wearing a corset: “ heart palpitations, difficulty breathing and light headedness. The symptoms sounded suspiciously like a romance novels description of love. Could it be that thousands of women had married their husbands in the mistaken belief that they were in love, when all along their corsets had been too tight? How disappointing to watch their love mysteriously vanish once their corsets were unlaced.”
Lynn Austin is fast becoming my go-to author for a lighthearted story with real substance and life and spiritual lessons.

Adelaide Stanhope had always lived the privileged life of the Gilded Age high society, that is, until her father's untimely death and the restrictions placed on the family's wealth by her great grandfather's will. Now there are hard choices to be made, choices made more difficult by the vastly different opinions of her mother and grandmother. The lives of these three women change as they learn many lessons over the next year, lessons readers of each of the story's represented generations show more could learn from as well.
This novel focuses on priorities: allowing them to be formed for us or choosing to form them on our own, determining what position one should have within their own priorities, and contemplating where and how God's will impacts one's priorities. These are meaty questions, ones Lynn Austin masterfully walks her characters through as they negotiate their changing circumstances. A secondary theme of how to live with or to move on from mistakes and hard feelings is equally well-handled. The story is beautifully written and is as entertaining as it is thought-provoking.
