A country camera, 1844-1914: rural life as depicted in photographs from the early days of photography to the outbreak of by Gordon Winter

This seminal book was the first to mine the rich vein of Victorian photography to depict a way of life since disappeared. It paved the way for the uncovering of historical photographs by generations of cameramen unknown and did much to revise our picture of the rural past as some sort of country idyll to a life that was rich in experience yet at the same time hard and unforgiving.

A Country Camera, 1844-1914 by Gordon Winter

A real gem.Early photos of country folk and country life in England.
The texts accompanying the photos are well written,informative and full of local knowledge.
Reading Hardys' Wessex novels with this book to hand will certainly be an enriching experience.
