Klas Östergren

A very good novel.
Östergren paints a very entertaining, flowing, epic story set in a time not too far away in the past. Sure, it is a fantastic plot, but it feels believable. The story, every character, and the setting are all described with such elegance and depth, that you rarely see its like.
“Fattiga riddare…” is as much a gangster story, as a story about people in general, and, not the least, a Stockholm illustration. All becomes alive.
The author uses a language that is crispy show more clear, rich in nuance, neat – without becoming pretentious. He constantly balances on the border of using a snobby language, without ever stepping over. Very very stimulating!

En mycket bra roman.
Östergren målar upp en mycket underhållande, driven, episk berättelse som utspelas i en inte alltför avlägsen tid. Visst, det är en fantastisk plot, men den känns trovärdig. Såväl historia, samtliga karaktärer och miljön beskrivs med sådan finess, sådant djup att man sällan ser dess like.
"Fattiga riddare..." är lika mycket en gangsterhistoria, folklivsskildring och (inte minst) stockholmsskildring. Allt blir levande.
Författaren använder sig av ett språk som är krispigt klart, nyansrikt, prydligt - utan att bli högtravande. Han balanserar på gränsen till snobbspråk hela tiden, utan att någonsin falla över gränsen. Mycket mycket stimulerande! show less

An ex-insurance claim investigator seeks justice in a post-apocalyptic society ruled by the Clan, whose behaviour and personalities are patterned after the Norse gods.

I enjoyed it and I would probably have done so even more if I'd known more about Norse mythology because I suspect there were some parallels I was missing

Vem kan ana hur snabbt livet kan förändras? Efter att författaren Östergren möter livsnjutaren Henry som ser glaset halvt fullt (åtminstone till fasaden spricker) och dennes nihilistiske bror Leo, blir hans liv aldrig det samma igen.

Klas Östergrens "snobbspråk" är förträffligt (speciellt när en stockholmare är uppläsaren) och hans sätt att linda ihop intrigen fungerar.

En ibland humoristisk men för det mesta en mörk tidsresa i Sverige unde Kalla kriget.

The Hurricane Party is part Swedish 1984 and Norse myth about the banquet all gods attend during which Loki, the trickster god, trips over his ego and kills a favored servant.

My reading of The Hurricane Party was another case of wishing the book was something it wasn't. I found the parts before and after the banquet story to be stilted, and somewhat mundane. Understanding that the foundation was being laid, I kept on. The banquet story was such fun to read, but didn't match with the show more rest.

It's a story about love but it takes a long way to get there. show less
