Franz Clemens Brentano (1838–1917)
Author of Psychology from an Empirical Standpoint
About the Author
Franz Bretano, the nephew of the poet Clemens Brentano and the author Bettina von Arnim, was born at Marienburg, in what is now Poland, and was ordained a Catholic priest in 1864. He taught philosophy and psychology at the Universities of Wurzburg and Vienna. Brentano wrote voluminously on a show more variety of philosophical subjects, including philosophy of mind and psychology, logic, epistemology, moral philosophy, and philosophical theology. In addition, he was a distinguished scholar of classical Greek philosophy, especially Aristotle. Brentano's influence was reflected in his many distinguished students including Edmund Husserl, Alexius Meinong, Carl Stumpf, Tamas Maszaryk, and Anton Marty. Brentano's best-known philosophical contribution is his theory of intentionality, which characterizes mental events as involving the direction of the mind to an object. THE PSYCHOLOGY OF ARISTOTLE In Particular His Doctrine of the Active Intellect (With an Appendix Concerning the Activity of Aristotle's God) by Franz Clemens Brentano
(A note here from the book's Preface: "In all, Franz Brentano wrote four books on Aristotle. The first of these is his well-known "Of the Several Senses of Being in Aristotle." The present book, first published in 1867, is the second. The third, "Aristoteles Lehre vom Ursprung des menschlichen Geistes" is an animadversion upon a theory of Zeller and a development and defense of a point first made in this volume. The last, 'Aristotles und seine Weltanschauung', written toward the end of show more Brentano's life, is a general account -- a composite photograph, as it were -- of Aristotle's metaphysical teaching." -G.R. show less
