The History of Alexander (Classics S.) by Quintus Curtius Rufus
Curtius's history of Alexander is the only full-length Latin history that survives, in a number of manuscripts but all of them are incomplete - Books 1 and 2 have not survived, the end of Book 5 and the beginning of Book 6 and the middle of Book 10 are missing. I bought this book in anticipation of Oliver Stone's film but didn't get round to reading it until now - a major reason was buying a couple of Alexander novels...

I quite enjoyed the history, amused by the numerous references to show more Alexander's famous good fortune (and wondering whether I should dig out my notes from a course on medieval historiography, we started off discussing concepts of time and history and I'm sure Fortune was mentioned but I can't remember at which point the ideas of Fortune's wheel turning and all that became popular...). And of course Curtius has a highly moralistic view of Alexander - all those evil corrupting Persian ways and all that drinking...

It was also amusing to read the notes pointing out places where Curtius gets it all wrong or makes things up... but apparently for all his unreliability he does cover certain events that other ancient writers don't. show less

Badly rebound and butchered, cut down so you can no longer read the 16th-century annotations, but still... almost an incunabulum!

The Ten Books of Qunitus Curtius Rufus: Containing, the Life and Death of Alexander the Great by Quintus Curtius Rufus
Fantastic translation of a great book. Current day translations have lost much of the rich literature content contained in translations and publications of the past. Must read for any historian or collector.

The history of Alexander by Quintus Curtius Rufus
A thinner Book than the life by Arrian, and more general purpose. The same story as Plutarch and Arrian. But We should have this work for completeness.
The original was probably extant by 70 CE.
