The plainsmen of the Yellowstone : a history of the Yellowstone Basin by Mark H. Brown

I did try to read it but ended up jumping around a lot. It's lots of facts but no thread running through them that stuck in my head. I just couldn't get rolling. It does have an index so I will consider it a reference book.

the Americans wanted their land. the local ranchers wanted their horses. The Nez Perce fled and after a long fighting retreat, nearly made it to Canada. Another tragedy of the American West.
