A book such as this should be lavishly illustrated, and Mr. Blunt's text is clear and readable. I have placed the "Fantasy" tag on this book, because it is about a very elaborate fantasy indulged in by a very well-heeled fan of the genre. Wagner anyone?
The Dream King, Ludwig II of Bavaria. With a Chapter on Ludwig and the Arts, by Michael Petzet by Wilfrid Blunt
Blunt writes in a popular style that makes this book a good introduction to Ludwig II and his world. One comes away with a somewhat skewed sense of Ludwig's importance in the process of German unification.
The definitive work on one of the world's greatest naturalists, the Swedish taxonomist Carl Linnaeus. This beautifully illustrated biography celebrates the man who will be remembered for ever as the father of modern plant taxonomy. This is an account of Linnaeus the man, his adventures in the wilds of Lapland, his family life and his relations with his pupils, as well as his epoch-making scientific achievements.
This is one of my favorite books: art and history combined, very readable
