Susan Herbert is, first and foremost, a truly gifted artist. Her style, talent, color choices, all show a mastery of skill. Aside from that, though, she's also an imaginative woman who tryle appreciates the feline, as evidenced by her series of wonderful illustrated cat books.

This book, "Shakespeare Cats", functions firstly as simply an enjoyable coffee-table book for frequent perusal. On another level, though, Herbert has cleverly illustrated 32 of Shakespeare's works, and with detail. The show more setting of each piece, the costumes, the detail of scene-setting -- all of this shows that in addition to being a cat-lover and an artist, Herbert is also not too shabby as a Shakespearean scholar as well. show less
These charming illustrations are sure to delight even the non-Shakespeare fans who discover it. This book does not tell the story of any of Shakespeare's plays; rather, it illustrates specific scenes from many of them, accompanied by relevant quotes from Shakespeare's text. The result is a series of tableaux vivantes, a collection of a few key images from a variety of the Bard's comedies, histories, and tragedies. Recommended to all Shakespeare fans and cat lovers.
This is a wonderful little book, filled with gorgeous illustrations. The author takes medieval imagery from paintings and books of hours and replaces the human figures with cats. These are lovingly drawn with a great eye for detail and humor. I highly recommend this book for any art or cat lover of any age.
You will recognize these famous painters, even though the paintings do look a little different! Susan Hebert has taken 30 or so of the paintings we all know, and substituted cats for the people. Da Vinci's Mona Lisa, Gainsborough's Blue Boy, Millais' First and Second Sermons, Waterhouse's Lady of Shalott, and Van Gogh's Self Portrait are my favorites. I f you like cats and painting, you'll have your own.
