First saw this wonderfully weird book on Reading Rainbow back in the day and I've loved it ever since. At its core is the story of a boy's loneliness and his attempts to cope with the loss of his pet; and how the love he gets back from an unexpected place helps everyone. The only caveat I have is that the core conflict of the story has never made sense. If the puppy has a little chomping issue (as puppies tend to do) the solution is to train said puppy, not take it away from the boy. His show more family is pretty brusque with him throughout.
