This book makes me feel like a muslim: it's so great to have a book which holds the truth, where every question is answered, correctly, completely, and with new openings. The only difference is that with Dahlhaus, that is the case.
Perhaps also endearing, although that may not be the first idea to come into mind with an old German professor. But the way Dahlhaus treats Beethoven and Rossini: he clearly loves Beethoven and deep down thinks less highly of Rossini, he nevertheless tries to treat show more them both with equal respect.
A modern classic, a book that has become a concept in musicological circles ("The nineteenth-century book"). Indispensible. show less

This is essentially a lengthy essay that covers the most popular period in music history. Music, aesthetics, cultural history, and politics are all covered. All of this from one of the twentieth century's most important musicologists. A fantastic work with many fascinating facts and strong conclusions.
This is essentially the entry on Wagner from The New Grove, expanded with additional biographical material by John Deathridge and issued as a very handy little stand-alone reference book for those of us who can't quite justify shelf space for a full set of the parent encyclopaedia. Everything you really need to know about Wagner condensed into 226 pages, including a short biography, a critical appreciation of his prose writings and his major musical works, and extensive tables of works and show more publications. The bibliography of secondary sources probably wouldn't be much use for a serious student, as it's almost thirty years since it was compiled, but there's plenty there to get a non-specialist started. show less
