this book is a great pattern book because it teaches children about the concepts of things moving back and forth. There are pictures alongside the words that give visual aide to students. There is also a limited amount of words on each page. This book is ideal for students who are just learning how to read. It teaches students basic concepts of movement as well as teaches students basic English words. Overall I give this book a 5/5. I would include it in my classroom library in grades k-1 show more and maybe even 2 if I had a larger number of students below grade level. This book is too basic for older children and would probably bore them. show less
This is a short nonfiction book perfect for young learners to help explain to them the plant life cycle. It uses vivid, up-close photographs and clear, simple language to describe how seeds are scattered and then grow. It was perfect for beginning a unit on plant life with my kindergarteners. Despite being a short title, it also contains some extras like a table of contents, glossary, etc. These elements are also helpful for the classroom to explain to students what tools they can find in show more nonfiction books to make the best use of them. show less
Push and Pull (Way Things Move) by Schaefer, Lola M. published by Pebble Books (2001) [Paperback] by Gail Saunders-Smith
I liked this pattern book because the repetition of push and pull actually builds on a child's vocabulary and syntactical knowledge. I feel that it especially helps ESOL and ELL students because it uses simple, repetetive sentences along with pictures so they can see how the two connect. I like how they have multiple examples of things that push and pull.
"Push and Pull" is a book that is great for guided reading because it follows a pattern. The first half of the book follows a pattern that talks about things that either push other things or get pushed. The second half of the book follows a pattern that talks about things that either pull other things or get pulled. The images allow the reader to use picture cues to figure out what the text says if he or she can not read it. The book can be considered a scientific text because it contains show more descriptive attributes of things that get pushed and pulled. It also contains examples of cause and effect. Students can make real life connections to this book by finding things in their lives that can be pushed or pulled. show less
