This memoir shares the story of a teenager navigating school, family, and independence with visual impairment. Students learn who supports her, what challenges she faces, and how she adapts to the world around her. Vocabulary such as accessibility, accommodation, and advocacy helps build inclusion-focused literacy. This book aligns with TEKS 8.7 on analyzing personal narratives. Middle school students appreciate how honest and relatable the story is. It strengthens a class library by show more representing disability experiences. show less
I read this with my grandson and he really enjoyed it. He liked talking about the colours and seeing some of the fall activities. We talked about what he does outside when the leaves are falling. This would be a great book to use in a primary classroom when discussing the seasons as well as integrating it into a visual arts lesson about colours. Great illustrations and simple text that would be easy for beginning readers to enjoy. The publisher generously provided me with a copy of this book show more via Netgalley. show less
This series is very negative and problematic. We find these children with names and a picture in the back, still explaining the generalized difficulty of their autism. While it is intended to help start a conversation with a neurotypical kid who is not being inclusive of their disabled peers, I hate how many probles this child has, with very little balance of where they find joy or how they expereince their lives in ways that would be familiar to other kids.
There are better books, though show more not many. show less
The book Light: First Science by Mari Schuh was a great read about light. It had vocabulary words in bold and a glossary at the end where kids could find the definition. These were great features of text that were embedded in the read. The book was very enaging for second graders as there was fun facts about light every other page. The book also asked thought provoking questions here and there throughout the book. This got kids thinking about the properties of light and applying what they show more are reading to the world around them. The examples throughout the book were interesting as well as relevant to a young reader, as they were everyday examples. The book also addressed a common misconception about light, that is that the moon does not create its own light, rather reflect the suns light. This book overall was a great first/second grade informative text about light. show less
