[A Calendar of Verse. With an introduction by George Saintsbury.] by George Edward Bateman Saintsbury
Some well known and not so well known verse from famous English poets and writers (Shakespeare, Milton, Byron, Shelley, Keats, Wordsworth, Coleridge, Spenser, Campion, Herrick, Sir Walter Scott, William Morris). One writer per month. It's interesting to see what's gone in and out of fashion since this was published. Sort of like a Page - A - Day calendar - only it's perpetual and much longer lasting. The quality of the poetry is a bit spotty, but it has a wonderful cover design and show more conveniently small size. show less
Contains: Jack of Newberie -- Thomas of Reading -- The unfortuate traveller -- Carde of fancie
John Dryden (/ˈdraɪdən/; 19 August [O.S. 9 August] 1631 – 12 May [O.S. 1 May] 1700) was an English poet, literary critic, translator, and playwright who was made England's first Poet Laureate in 1668.
He is seen as dominating the literary life of Restoration England to such a point that the period came to be known in literary circles as the Age of Dryden. Walter Scott called him "Glorious John"
