This is a gorgeous book. Beautiful cover, beautiful typesetting, good binding, wonderful content. Though I didn't get what I was expecting (something more along the lines of Scott McCloud's books) the book was really interesting and, well... short. I would have loved to keep on reading. Thankfully, the book references an abundance of works for further study.
Last but not least, Ivan Brunetti comes across as the nicest person ever.

When Annemarie's teacher assigns them an art project to make 12 of something but in groups (3 groups of 4, 4 groups of 3, 2 groups of 6, etc.), the class gets very creative in their designs!
This clever comic strip-style book teaches math in a completely fun way. (I don't like math, and I was entertained.) It will gets young readers thinking about various ways of doing something -- like the fact that the kids in the book can make their groups in a number of different ways.
The illustrations show more are more cartoonish than I usual prefer, but I think it works quite well with this book. There's also a great deal of diversity shown in the classmates, which is fantastic to see.
With only a few words per sentence and limited sentences per page, this book is a good choice for younger children who are working on reading on their own. show less

This book is very unusual -- a simple comic book for young readers. The storyline is a homework assignment for each student to draw 12 things in a set of their choosing. So each student has to come up with an item and how to show it in a set of 12. I think my favorite was the one showing the life story of a tree -- 4 seed, 4 seedlings, + 4 grown trees = set of 12.
Not much action going on other than thinking and drawing...however, it does introduce the concept of 12 and can lead to a show more discussion of sorting. The cartoon drawings are colorful and simple which may inspire young artists to create their own story or at least add their ideas to this one.
Young readers may need help navigating the panels to learn how to read a graphic novel/comic. show less

The world is made of shapes, as a teacher and her class discover. Fairly simple language (appropriately, as this is a leveled reader), as well as some great tips for sharing comics with beginning readers in the back.
