A racist couple who want to adopt a child learn to be less racist (maybe?) thanks to a pissed off magical fish who regrets granting them a wish without vetting their personal beliefs first.

Actual quote: "You want her to be our daughter? She can't be our daughter! That girl is completely black, and we are white."

This gift from a peculiar in-law left me shaking my head the first and only time I read it to my daughter. She disliked it even more than I did when she was four.
Summary:
The sequel to Die Roten Matrosen. The book plays in the early 1930s, at the time when Hitler comes to power. It is seen from the perspective of 15-year-old Hans, who witnesses the way life is becoming harder for the Jews. Hans must decide what side he is on: for or against his brother, who is a Communist; for or against his sister, whos boyfriend joins the SA. When his brother and brother's wife are both arrested for being Communists, Hans must decide if he will live with his back show more against the wall (mit dem rucken zur wand), especially after he meets and falls in love with a Jewish girl who is afraid what Hitler has in store for her. show less
