This remains one of the best books that I have read on Greek literature, especially on Homer. Snell had a thorough knowledge of the texts and contexts. Rather than the mess of theory and politics that too many current scholars serve up, Snell observes what is actually in the texts. His main theme is the Greeks' gradual discovery of mind, motivation, and self, beginning with Homeric heroes who are "directed" by the gods, and working through early lyric, tragedy, and philosophy. He returns to show more Homer throughout the book, closely examining his use of language and elucidating the precise meaning of many words in Homeric Greek. show less
