Double Take: From Monet to Lichtenstein (28 Masterworks from the Paul Allen Family Collection Exclusively at Experience Music Project, Seattle, Washington) by Paul H. Tucker
As the very long name states, this book takes a look at 28 masterworks from the (no longer) Paul Allen Family Collection back when it was on display at EMP (now called Museum of Pop Culture) in 2006. The author, Paul H. Tucker, seeks to look at pairs, trios, or even a quad of these artworks and compare them in ways that one would not have immediately considered. Occasionally, the historical aspects of a location are mentioned or a circumstance of how the artwork came to be is shared. From show more colors, to the choice of tones, to looks of models, etc., Tucker pulls together different thoughts that I know I would not have considered. While some sets of work have shared visual cues such as Venice, others do not.
This photo book is printed such that the reader is encouraged to read the comparison text first, then unfold the pages to see the arts mentioned. I sometimes find this annoying that I am flipping between text and image as I re-read specifics. Ah well, I suspect the objective is served. Tucker ends with a quote from Monet. “I have only looked at what the universe has shown to bear witness to it through my paintbrush. Put your hand in mine, and let us help one another to see things better.” I thought this was an appropriate quote to illustrate his purpose with these comparisons. show less

An excellent book and exhibition on the later years in the life and work of Claude Monet. The focus is on his studies in light and color - paintings of his garden in Giverny, the lily pond and Japanese-style bridge - and how his deteriorating eyesight (he underwent two cataract surgeries) impacted his work.
