Once Covid hit, I thought of this book often. It's a case study in how plague created economic mobility for a young man of unusual industry, and, I would say, a combination of bravery, industry, and virulent immunity. It's painstakingly researched, but then, as Wrightson notes, research becomes easier when the subject is a medieval ambulance-chasing-man-about-the-village who spends mornings with the nearly-deceased and afternooons at the courthouse. Nearly every day.
