Reviews
A highly readable participant observer account of, yes, caste and class in a southern town---Indianola MS, where the author stayed in the boarding house run by Craig Claiborne's mother. CC was 14 at the time. One is familiar with accounts of the segregated South in the context of the Civil Rights era; this book, written in 1937 and continuously in print since, cannot envision the collapse of a system so solidly buttressed by every legal, and more importantly, psychological support. show more Fortunately the author's Freudian sympathies are not overly obtrusive. show less
