Detroit: I Do Mind Dying: A Study in Urban Revolution (Updated Edition) (South End Press Classics Series) by Dan Georgakas
This proved to be an early example of how powerful the university could be. this wasn't assigned; I happened upon it while wandering through the stacks. It isn't overly scholarly, it is largely an oral history. It shocked the hell out of me.

Native Americans are what I believe is the most altered part of history that a lot of people are unaware of the untold actual truth of how they were taken over, forced from their homes, told they were savage and had to believe in god or be slaughtered.
