Synopsis
‘The season of the beast was near…’ 1304. The King of France and the Church are locked in a
battle for power that will also decide the fate of the Knights Templar and Hospitaller.
Meanwhile in the Normandy countryside, young widow Agnes de Souarcy, the beautiful lady of the manor, is fighting to retain her independent way of life, aware that her spiteful half-brother will do anything to destroy her. These two different worlds collide in the forest near Souarcy, where a show more terrifying creature begins to kill and mutilate a succession of monks on their way to deliver a
secret message of momentous importance. In the first Agnes de Souarcy Chronicle, Andrea Japp
offers the reader a fast-paced, multi-layered mystery within a richly imagined portrait of medieval France.
This is a difficult one...the story and setting were great but something just didn't click. I think I expected a bit more substance. The writing was fine and richly detailed with a good sense of time and place. I struggled with the character of Clement in particular and thought the child prodigy rather implausible. Not sure if I liked it enough to read the next 2 instalments... show less

The Lady Agnès Mystery - Volume 1: The Season of the Beast and The Breath of the Rose by Andrea Japp
Whilst reading this book I couldn't help but compare the story to ones written by Agatha Christie.
Both authors were trained in toxicology and both used that knowledge very well.
This story is an exciting account of life in 13/14th century France during the time of plague.
It is a very atmospheric tale of possible incest, torture, murder, family feuds etc.
I read this story in one sitting and I look forward to reading more from Andrea Japp.

The Season of the Beast: The Agnes De Souarcy Chronicles 1 (The Agnfs De Souarcy Chronicles) by Andrea H. Japp
I enjoyed the intewoven storied - others have chided the characters of Clement and Agnes but for good to triumph over evil, our characters must assume their roles diligently. On to the second chronicle - The Breath of the Rose.
The Breath of the Rose: The Agnes De Souarcy Chronicles 2 (The Agnfs De Souarcy Chronicles) by Andrea H. Japp
The interweaving stories are slowly merging as the main cast cross paths. The truth of their quest is beginning to emerge but they are yet to understand. On to the third chronicle - The Divine Blood.
