Medallion is probably my favorite Dawn Watkins book. It is simply written, but not of the amateur variety. It has excitement and depth. The theme is subtle but clear, and although not overtly Christian, it is clearly from a Christian world view. Yes, it has some whimsical fantasy, not of the witchcraft variety, but with good humor and wit.
A much more challenging read than Medallion, Shield is a good story with depth, well written. It is an excellent stand-alone story with strong female characterization, but it also provides insight into some key characters found in Medallion. Not for a poor reader, without ample preparation. Even though this is a prequel, I think Medallion should be read first.
Whimsy, a believable plot, and sympathetic characters make this a good choice. A boy struggles with a big move. Well done by an excellent author and a talented artist.
