Let me say this, any cookbook which has a chapter devoted just to cupcakes has its heart in the right place! If you love to bake, then you will love "Taste of Home Baking". Starting off with "Baking Basics" and ending with "Holiday Classics", this book is a treasure trove of practical baking advice and techniques, information on ingredients and cooking terms, and also a helpful guide for choosing the right cooking tools and appliances. The ring binder format lays flat and includes snap on show more clear page covers to use as splash guards when you are preparing a recipe. The pages are loaded with step-by-step instructions, color photographs, cooking hints and more. The amazing variety of recipes range from sweet to savory, and they are written in user-friendly language with an overall moderate ease of preparation. The chapter called "Trimmed-Down Favorites" offers hope for those with special dietary needs. The recipes may be "lite", but they are luscious! The "Holiday Classics" look so good that you almost want to eat the pages! The "Almost Homemade" chapter makes the most of convenience foods and turns them into something special. You will find every type of baked goods from the simple to the sensational. This morning, I made "Dutch Apple Loaf", a quick bread made with buttermilk, tart apples and walnuts. With the aromas of the apple bread, freshly-brewed coffee, and bacon sizzling in the skillet, my kitchen smelled heavenly! A perfect weekend breakfast. I will be reaching for this cookbook again and again, and each time I will discover something new and wonderful.

This book tends to assume that you're not particularly skilled in any particular craft and attempts to present crafts that anyone can ... attempt. Doilies in this book come ready made and are modified with sewing thread or glue. Still there are some (a surprising number of) projects that I wouldn't mind trying, a decorative star made of recycled Christmas cards that I intend to try if I find 10 old cards of appropriately vintage cuteness, and a minimalist Nativity stable that I "must" make show more for this Christmas out of pruned sticks joined with hot glue. show less
I learned long ago that anything associated with "The Taste of Home" magazine would be delightful and delicious. I was given this terrific cookbook by a friend who knows how much I love to cook and read cookbooks. "The Taste of Home Cookbook: Timeless Recipes From Trusted Home Cooks" is a beautifully packaged, wonderfully detailed and rich resource for both kitchen novices and well-seasoned cooks. The first chapter, "Kitchen Basics", is like a cooking class, loaded with information and easy show more and helpful guidelines to use in your own kitchen. Tools, techniques, terms, tips & tidbits galore! This cookbook is very complete, not only offering scrumptious recipes, but also cooking and serving suggestions for each type of food. The bright and colorful photographs are plentiful and encourage you to try the recipes--they also tempt you to eat the pages right out of the book! This is a big book, but the ring binder format lays flat, and the pages stay open where you leave them. This is a book which you will open again and again, not just to hunt down a recipe, but for the simple enjoyment of discovering all the tasty treasures between the covers. You will never wonder: "What can I fix for dinner?". The answer will be right at your fingertips with this book. In addition to the cookbook itself, there is an amazing CD included: "Celebrations: 473 delicious recipes and dozens of ideas for year-round entertaining." Now, this is the kind of CD that foodies can truly enjoy! Sit back and relax with a cup of good coffee (and a plate of brownies--see "Super Brownies" on page 570 of the book). If you love to cook, or just love to look, the book and the CD will satistfy your culinary cravings. show less
I bought this older (1998) cookbook for a dollar at a Friends of the Mukilteo Library book sale and the purchase was one of the best dollars I spent in a long time. The wide assortment of recipes practically guarantee that all readers will find something they want to make. Many of the recipes are impractical for small families. They call for massive amounts of ingredients measured in cans and pounds and yield 10 servings. There are a few that are suitable for empty-nesters like my wife and show more myself, and others can be reduced to a manageable size.

The book is organized into 18 chapters that are a mixture of food (e.g., appetizers and beverages, breads, salads and salad dressings, soups and sandwiches) and primary ingredient (e.g., beef, pork, eggs, vegetables). Additional chapters cover kitchen basics and menu planning. Most of the sections include tables that summarize cooking times and other considerations.

I try to list the recipes I want to try in the front of every cookbook I own, and in this instance the list is 55 items long.
