The great white bear Pompon stands in the museum, caught in one spot and position eternally. As a sculpture, he cannot move, and must maintain his spot, his sole pleasure derived from the admirers that come to see him. But Pompon longs to travel, and one day a little boy named Leo's attention (and touch) gives him wings, setting him free...
Inspired by François Pompon's famous polar bear statue - created between 1923 and 1933, Ours blanc stands in Paris's Musée d'Orsay - Pompon offers an show more engaging tale of a child interacting with a work of fine art in a museum, bringing the power of the imagination to bear on his experience. The artwork by illustrator Joanna Boillat uses the white spaces of Pompon's body in creative ways, creating straight and curving lines with which the more colorful Leo interacts. Originally published in German (according to WorldCat) as Ein Eisbär im Museum?: Pompon, this sweetly imaginative picture-book has also recently been published in France. Recommended to anyone looking for children's stories set in museums, or about young people interacting in an imaginative way with art. show less

The Nativity is a retelling of the Christmas story using images from Giotto's frescoes in the Scrovegni Chapel in Padua. Beginning with the Annunciation it continues through the Visitation of Mary to Elizabeth and the journey to Bethlehem. After the birth the book continues with the arrival of shepherds and wise men and the slaughter of the Innocents ending with Joseph's dream and the flight to Egypt. The last page has a nice allusion to Easter that is subtle in a way I don't normally show more associate with picture books, but is really the perfect ending.
I'll be the first to admit that I'm not Giotto's greatest fan—I really don't like the way he paints eyes—but there is something to be said about picture books using classic art. It's a great way to expose children to the great artists without forcing it on them, like hiding zucchini in chocolate muffins. Overall, definitely one to include in the Christmas picture book collection. show less

A treasured painting by Paul Klee is the basis for this whimsical tale about a cat and a bird, and about the themes of freedom and friendship. A cat lives in a house filled with toys, but everyday she dreams of being free like the bird she watches through the windo. Finally with the bird's help, she is able to escape and dance on the roofs of the city by moonlight. This lovely story unfolds in a series of playful, brilliantly colored illustrations based on the artist Paul Klee's work. show more Influenced by the artist's bright palette and use of shapes and line, the book culminates in a dazzling reproduction of Klee's Cat and Bird.
